Around 200 AD, near Rome's Palatine Hill, someone scratched a crude drawing into a plaster wall: a donkey-headed figure on a cross, with a young man raising his hand beside it, captioned "Alexamenos worships his god." Widely believed to be an insult, mocking a Christian at a time when the faith was a misunderstood minority belief. A joke scratched into plaster two thousand years ago, now considered possibly the earliest surviving depiction of Jesus himself.
